Football 101

Yours truly has had a moment of clarity. Well, it's not all mine - it was brought on by this post on the DC Drama Grrls blog. So, in hopes that there are plenty of women out there in the blog world with a thirst for football knowledge, I (and hopefully The Captain) will offer the opportunity for you all to know what you need to know.

Instead of just throwing stuff out there that may or may not be needed/used, will the lady readers kindly tell us what about football they need to know or don't understand (and please don't say "everything".. that can't possibly be the case) and periodically a lesson will be posted to fulfill the needs of you loyal readers. What say you?

Additionally, since we're all about helping everyone out, perhaps we will consider later going with other sports (baseball, basketball, soccer), but since football has just begun we'll go with it first.

So... what can I do for ya?

I'd be happy to provide the feminine point of view. Let's face it, guys don't always explain things well or in a way that makes sense...

I-66, hold this thought. An idea is percolating within my head, which I will reveal to you and then to the rest of the blogging world. And Sports Chick, you'll definitely be pre-warned as well.

You should hold a "Football 101" class and ask the ladies to attend.

Never know...you might do everyone a favor and get a date out of it at the same time.

Agree with SportsChick...not all guys are good teachers. I regularly subject my girlfriends to Sundays at the sportsbar with a little learnin' between plays.

I like this idea a lot. Good one, Captain!

I don't pretend to be an expert, but I at least know how the ladies think and can help accordingly.

That was actually the idea that I was going to put out there, to be held on a Sunday, at a sports bar to be determined later.

As for the date thing, there's a certain person who would probably shred me for that, so it's not an option, health wise.

I'll get the word out when a Sunday has been settled on. Location ideas are always welcome.

Any excuse to watch football outside on my non-cable having condo is a good excuse for me!

I think the old Park Bench pub opens in a few days/weeks. Always an excellent location.

ok well i'm going to ask the first questions:

what's a pass-option or pass-option fake?

and college football has 2 halves while pro os 4 quarters??

do you mean option pass?

And I think you have football and basketball crossed:

both NCAA and NFL football games are 4 quarters

NCAA basketball is 2 halves and NBA basketball is 4 quarters

I-66 is a longtime guru of the Madden and NCAA football games, so he can probably explain specific plays better than I. My football gaming is limited to the old Tecmo Super Bowl games for NES and SNES.

The term "Option Pass" I usually associate as a "Halfback Option." It is a play where the quarterback hands off/pitches the ball to the running back. Instead of running with it, the running back will throw the ball instead, or at least, has the option to, which is where the name comes from. There's more to it...being behind the line of scrimmage, etc., but I'll let I-66 give you the subtleties that I've missed, as well as anything I left out.

You know, by using "instead" twice in that last sentence, I think I'm setting a personal record for being redundant this week. I'm making that mistake everywhere. Such is the result of typing fast while at work.
