Monday Night Notes

- The severity of punishment handed down to Mathis and Trotter ahead of the game aside, you are all PROFESSIONALS. You got what you deserved

- Good job by the referees of keeping control of pre-game activities, by the way.

- Michael Vick passing: 12/23 (52.2%), 156 yards, 0 TD, 1 INT, 4 Sacks. He scored 1 TD rushing and fumbled 3 times, losing 2. Awesome numbers. And how about those overthrows?

- By the way, that’s a QB rating of 55.7. Worse than Eli Manning, Kyle Boller, Anthony Wright, and Trent Dilfer.

- Before any Vick defenders pull the “it’s just one game against a great defense” routine, he’s a career 53.6% passer for 154 yards per game. Awesome numbers. Great quarterback.

- David Akers is last night’s goat. One of the best kickers in the league misses 2 field goals that he regularly makes? You can count on one hand the times that will happen to him.

Vick ROCKS. What a star!

And I know that Akers sucked b/c he's on my FF team. That's the only explanation.

I'm glad you've come to your senses, Sportschick!

I won't use the "good defense" argument, or the "he actually did better in the pocket (against a good defense)" argument.

But I will throw this out to you Vick-hata's.

Tell me, if Vick were offered straight up for the best player on your team (the Redskins?), that you wouldn't take it.

Also tell me there weren't at least 2 or 3 times during the game that Vick did something and you said "wow".

I assume that comment is more directed to I-66 than myself, as I am not nearly as much a Vick-Hater as he is. Based on our current QB situation, here is my assessment.

According to some SI/Sporting News or other completely arbitrary sports publication, the three best players on the Redskins are Cornelius Griffin, Shawn Springs and Lavar Arrington. I'm also going to throw Marcus Washington and Sean Taylor in there. Of those 5, the only one I would consider trading Vick straight up for would be Arrington. I think he's the easiest to replace (more than Washington) and his salary would offset.

Offensively, I would seriously consider trading Clinton Portis for Michael Vick. I-66 will skewer me for this, but honestly, Ladell Betts is perfectly built for Joe Gibbs offensive system, and it's not as if Vick would have too many chances to kill us with Int.'s with Gibbs playbook. That scrambling ability helps.

Just my two cents.

Yeah! Vick really showed what he was capable of last night. Did you see those numbers?

All right, I'll be good now...

Absoultely not.

Portis for Vick is a terrible trade. Financial implications for both sides not withstanding...

53.6% completion percentage, 154 yards per game, 6.9 yards per attempt...

or... 100.8 yards rushing per game, 34 career TDs and 4.9 yards per carry...

wow.. that's tough.. I mean, I'd LOVE to have a QB who completes less than 54 percent of his passes and 154 yards per game. OH WAIT! We already HAVE one! Patrick Ramsey (trade not withstanding) completes 55.6% and throws for 176.6 career.

"But, I-66, Michael Vick does so many things running the football"

Yeah. That's what we have Clinton Portis for.

Of course, this started an argument as soon as I got home at the Sports Pad. My basic premise (salary cap and all that other shit not withstanding) is that I believe LaDell Betts can be just as successful a running back as Portis in Gibbs' system.

Secondly, Vick is the equivalent of Ramsey and Brunell in passing ability, but can do things with broken plays.

Obviously, my feelings on Betts are not agreed with, but that's what makes arguments so much fun.

no.. I like Ladell Betts. But he's not as good as Portis - system or no system.

This could be digging me even deeper, but I'm still not convinced Clinton Portis wasn't just a product of Mike Shanahan's running system. After all, that system also made stars out of Mike Anderson, Reuben Droughns, and Quentin Griffin temporarily.

I like Portis, but he hasn't proved to me yet that he can succeed outside of it. You can run Betts 343 times a years, probably get about the same amount of yards, get more durability, and it would be a much cheaper option.

Sure, Betts won't run away from anyone, but neither did Stephen Davis, and I'd kill to have him back, if health was guaranteed and all. The body type and running styles are similar. The only thing Betts doesn't have is a track record, and God knows he might get a chance this year if Portis gets worn down.

You're kidding me right? You guys don't want to win? Forget the numbers - look at the record!

If Ramsey=Vick, and Portis covers all of your running chores, why are the Redskins terrible?

I won't dispute that by the numbers, Vick is not the accomplished passer that many qbs are. But why do you penalize him because he can run? Yards are yards, right? Even though he's a 2200-2500 yd passer, he's going to get 800-1000 yds running! What's wrong w/ that?

I can't believe you would turn down Vick for any player on your roster (I-66). At least Captain has some sense...

I don't penalize him because he can run. I penalize him because he can't throw.

Culpepper, McNabb, Steve Young, Randall Cunningham, McNair

All of them could run. All of them could throw the football. Michael Vick can run, sure.. but you want him to win a game with his arm and he'll throw the ball into the 3rd row.

And don't suppose that I wouldn't trade any Redskin for Vick. That wasn't the question you asked. If Atlanta wanted Ade Jimoh I'd say go ahead and do it...

...and suggest Vick return kicks or play wideout. After all, we did just cut WR/PR Antonio Brown.

And Captain... durability on Betts? You don't think he's never spent time on the injured list - mised 7 weeks with a fractured forearm in '03. Portis has not missed as many in his entire career.

I really meant any good Redskin.

Fair enough critique, but the thing is, Vick can win games with his legs when you think he has to win it with his arm (see last year's Carolina game).

I honestly think there are very few NFL teams who wouldn't trade any of their top tier players for Vick.

New England
Indianapolis
Philadelphia
Minnesota
Pittsburgh

Really - I think that's it.

Gentlemen, this is entertaining.

If I remember correctly, this "terrible" quarterback took an (arguably) struggling team to the NFC championship game this past season.

Where were your Redskins at? Where was Dante Culpepper at?

I can honestly say Vick is worth more than the Majority of the Redskins Offense ... COMBINED.
