The state of D.C. Sports

Fear not, good folks. Despite the title of this post, which I can see could be misconstrued, we're not going anywhere, this is just a quick look at the current state of the D.C. sports scene, and what we can all look forward to.

Redskins: Hiring Al Saunders is a genius move. Hello Super Bowl XVI, or whatever the Roman Numeral is for that. By the way, does anyone else think the Skins should draft Sinorice Moss in April? I mean, we'd be getting a second receiver that we so desperately need, and this would have to be the first time in NFL history that two wideouts who were also brothers starter at WR for the same team. Is there any downside to this?

Wizards: Underachieving, though there's enough signs of life to make me still believe. Amazingly, despite our sub .500 record, we're still in 8th playoff position. Thank you NBA, for having way to many teams in the postseason. Caron Butler is coming along nicely, Brendan Haywood is a bitch.

Nationals: Um, it's kind of hard when there's no owner, no set payroll, and no superstars wanting to play here. I'll still go, but I'm not expecting much at all from this season. Linda Cropp needs to shut her fat mouth and get this stadium deal done.

Caps: Still not a fan of hockey, though if Ovechkin keeps making those miracle shots, I may have to attend my first Caps game in years. But I'm still not there yet.

D.C. United: Yawn....I'll let I-66 handle this one, I don't care enough.

Georgetown: Did I mention I called the win over Duke? You can see it on the other blog, but there it is, Georgetown over Duke. G-Town was so good when I wa growing up, seeing them competitive again is kind of nostalgic.

you're not serious about Sinorice Moss, are you? You want downside? going from 1 to 2 tiny recievers who generally won't go across the middle is not an improvement. We need a #2 reciever with size to get open on the intermediate routes, like the crossing route to get 10 yards on 3rd and 8. Be serious.

Two words...sibling rivalry. You think these two wouldn't be killing themselves every play to out-do each other and be the better brother. Plus, it would be a first.

Despite the fact that the supposition you're making is absolutely preposterous, I'll entertain it to this point: Even if the Redskins really wanted Sinorice Moss, the chances of him going in the first round are very good, which means they would not be able to draft him without a first round pick.

1) brendan haywood must be referred to as brenda haywood from this point forward

2) calling you out on the nats issue. the situation with the ownership/stadium couldn't be worse. but we've added soriano and sosa. granted, they're not gonna put up career numbers. but you can't tell me this offense isn't leaps and bounds better than last year. and don't forget swapping zimmerman for castilla.

3) no love for mason basketball? tied for first in the CAA, RPI peaked at 38 last week before the lost to UNC wilmington.

Okay, these are decent arguments, so I'll bite.

1. Actually, no argument here, he pisses me off. Time to let Andray Blatche develop, and let Etan and Michael Ruffin play the middle. Haywood is over-rated. Centers aren't supposed to be afraid of contact.

2. Do you really think Sammy Sosa is going to make a difference? Seriously? Did you see what happened to him last year when he couldn't juice anymore? And the fences at RFK are much deeper than at Camden Yards. I don't care how much or how little they're paying him, Sosa will suck this year. He's a below average fielder too, and there's a lot of territory to cover an defense.

The same thing will happen to Soriano. Soriano can hit, but as for power...the same thing will affect his numbers, the deep fences. Look what happened to Jose Guillen last year. Soriano is not Barry Bonds, where it doesn't matter how far away the fences are.

His numbers will go down. He strikes out about as much as Wilkerson, so no, I don't think the offense is leaps and bounds better this year, not because of them. Not too mention, he doesn't want to play here.

Ryan Zimmerman, on the other hand, I'm ecstatic about, because he's a line drive hitter who should thrive in RFK.

3. George Mason isn't technically in D.C., but you could point out that the Skins aren't either. Honestly though, I have nothing against Mason, it's just that Georgetown and Maryland interest me more, and GW as well. Georgetown because I'm seeing a team from my childhood in a resurgence, and Maryland because I enjoy wathcing teams self-destruct.

As for GW, how can you dislike a team who has a player named Pops Mensah-Bosu (sp?) I don't think it's possible.

I hope people were watching this weekend as Mason routed ODU at the Patriot Center. And I hope people got a chance to read Mike Wise's solid column on why Mason is deserving of everyone's attention.

I plug the Patriots for two reasons. 1) We all love the mid-major that sneaks up and beats the undeserving sixth team from a crappy major (Maryland this year, anyone?) that makes the tournament. Mason could be that team. But more importantly, 2) when Mason knocks one of these teams off in March I can point to a series of blog posts and say, "See? Told you I'm smart."

I understand the arguments for Sosa and Soriano's numbers taking a nosedive in RFK. I don't dispute that. But even an off year by Sosa is better than the power numbers put up by this team last year. And I think Soriano will do just fine driving the gaps in RFK. That's assuming he even wants to play at all.

But beyond that Sosa (and to a smaller extent, Soriano) add starpower and celebrity to the club. That's crucial when you're trying to build a fan base. Everyone knows Sosa, and he immediately becomes 'everyone's favorite Nat.' It pains me to say this, but we're not going to contend this year anyway. So we might as well sell some jerseys and get average folks involved.

And as a proud season ticket holder in Section 470 (right field porch), I gotta figure one of these guys is gonna hit one into my lap, right?

How about GW! #10 in the country. I'd love to see GW play Georgetown though, that would be a great rivalry. The teams have played each other the most anyway, just not in a long time.

wow it took me forever to find this, and i almost feel embarrassed for bringing it up. but i knew i talked about it somewhere, and i had some free time at work to search.

i gotta get at least some credit for this, especially when you consider the date it was posted:

"3) no love for mason basketball? tied for first in the CAA, RPI peaked at 38 last week before the lost to UNC wilmington.
