NFL Observations

Well the first true weekend of NFL preseason football is in the books... a few things of note:

- Terrell Owens. That there is the last time I will write his name on this blog until either the situation is resolved (ie: he is traded or gets cut) or the regular season begins. I'm tired of hearing about it. Although I must admit, Donovan McNabb is becoming increasingly enjoyable on the mic.

- Mark Brunell must've got smacked with a 2x4 or something because he remembers how to throw with zip.

- Michael Vick is nothing more than a running back under center.

- Peyton Manning is still the best QB in all the league.

- Time for Chicago to draft a real quarterback next year.

- Yes, I am aware that they have Rex Grossman.

- Dallas sucks.

HOW can you call yourself a sports fan and say you are sick of Michael Vick??? He is bar-none the most exciting player in the NFL.

Running back under center? Too early to make that call. People forget he is 24, has had only 2 full seasons, and the 2nd season he was learning a completely new offense. And he went to the Pro Bowl both years.

You guys are nuts!!

Phil, it's okay. You're from the Atlanta area, right? I understand where your delusions come from then, because you want him to succeed. The point is, Vick only completes about half his passes, and horribly over/underthrows people at times. Can he run...sure, but so can McNabb, Culpepper and a few others. The difference is that most of them can put the ball into the receivers hands on a consistant basis.

This is not to say I agree with I-66 completely. I completely disagree with his opinion that Peyton Manning is the best QB in the league. With my life depending on a team I pick winning a game, I'm taking Tom Brady, no questions asked.

Manning puts up gaudy numbers, Brady puts up servicable ones. Brady, in case you haven't noticed, has three rings, Manning has zero. And Brady has beaten Manning head to head almost every time, if not every time.

The way I see it, this is Marino vs. Montana all over again. Marino put up incredible passing numbers, and never had a single ring to show for it. I wonder sometimes if Manning's career will pan out the same way.

In the 80's, if your life depended on your team winning a game, do you take Marino or Montana? I don't think there's much question there, and I don't think there should be any now. Tom Brady is the man.

Vick is totally overrated. I don't recall seeing him in the Super Bowl lately? All the sportscasters drool over him, but he's not *that* impressive. There are much better QBs out there.

I second The Captain's feelings about Manning and Brady. Right on the mark.

Michael Vick completes less than 54% of his passes, and in his 2 seasons in which he started 15 games he has never averaged over 200 yards passing per game. Only 3 times last year did he throw for more than 200 yards. In only 5 of his games did he throw more TDs than INT's. He had a QB rating of 78.1, equal to that of Tim Rattay, only slightly better than Joey Harrington. Running back under center.

And re: Manning and Brady, this is the MVP or MOP argument. The NCAA basketball tournament gives the MOP award for Most Outstanding Player as opposed to the MVP for most valuable. I might wager that Brady is most valuable to his team, but that's not the same as being the best player. That distinction, for my recognition, goes to Manning.

First off, yes, I'm biased. Now that that's out of the way...

So who are you comparing Vick to? He is not a "stand in the pocket" passer. Show me the stats of another 2 year quarterback who had a completely new offense in his second year playing?

By the way, Donovan McNabb has not thrown for better than 58% in 5 of the 6 years he has been in the NFL (his 1st year he threw below 50%).

Hasn't been to the Super Bowl?? Because he has only reached the NFC championship in his second season playing he is overrated??? With all due respect Sportschick, is insane logic.

Vick has been a victim of over-hype, if only because the expectations of him are ridiculous. No qb in his position is expected to do more. Will Eli Manning be considered an over-rated flop if he does not go to the Super Bowl or complete over 60% of his passes?

Also, why is he penalized because he can run? If Rattay ran a 4.3, would you tell him not to?

I agree, right now, Vick is not the best qb, but as I said, the expectation level put on him are too much. The media has caused this. I think it would be more fair to evaluate him over the next 2 seasons, provided he remains injury and herpes free (a big if).

Peyton the best? He went a whopping 0 for 1 in the first preseason game. My man Culpepper, however, was 5 of 6 for 84 yards, a touchdown and no INTs. He even ran it once on a busted play for +2 yards. If it's 3rd and 5, I'd take Culpepper over Manning or Brady every time, if for no other reason that at 265 pounds, if he had to rush for it and knock someone down to get another set of downs, he could do it. Props to the Captain for at least *mentioning* him. Gosh!
